Day 32 of the 365 Day Challenge: rethink my water usage
Can you tell from my blog posts that I LOVE staying home with my son? This is the best and most rewarding job I have ever had. Even on the tough days I am sincerely having the time of my life. Sometimes I feel guilty for having so much fun at home while Tom has to go to work. I feel sorry for him every day when he has to get in his car and leave.
Since I feel so bad for him, I try to make sure the house chores are all accomplished during the week so he doesn’t have to work too hard on his weekend. I hate to sound like a 50′s housewife, but that is pretty much my life these days. Sometimes I get a little too zealous and I do laundry more often than it actually needs to be completed. I use to only do 2-3 big loads once a week, but now that I am home I find myself doing several smaller loads almost every day. I didn’t think too much about it until I got this in the mail:
This is a chart of our water usage. Our bill was the highest it has EVER been this month. It was high in May, but we had constant guests with the new baby so that makes sense. I haven’t started doing anything different this month other than little loads of laundry. I am still cloth diapering, but I have been doing the same amount of cloth diaper laundry since Robert was born, so it should be different this month.
Basically, I have got to change my habits. I am going to stop throwing things in the wash just because I want them clean right away. Instead, I am going to go back to a designated laundry day and try to do bigger loads again. I am also going to wait until most of the cloth diapers are dirty instead of half my stash to consolidate the washes.
As an environmentalist, I feel so bad about wasting this much water. I am going to be thinking of other little ways to make a difference. Hopefully I can report back next month with an improvement. Wish me luck!
Here is a baby pic of the day!
We went for a walk this morning and my little man fell asleep.
