This last year has been non-stop with transitions. We got pregnant, moved, Tom changed jobs- twice, and we had a baby. Just when I thought things would settle down for a while we decided to make a few more transitions. The latest change is my job. I went back to work for a month after my maternity leave and it was too much stress for me. I don’t want to get into the details, but I was working from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with little time for family. Tom’s new job has him out of the house for over 12 hours and we decided it was too much for both of us to work 12 hour days when we have an infant.
Long story short: At 8 p.m. tonight I will officially be a stay at home mom! This also means that after I get my last paycheck next Friday we will be a one income family with ~$100,000 in student loan debt.
When I first started this blog, my only goal was to pay off our loans as soon as possible. It’s crazy to think how much has changed since I set that goal. When we were deciding if I should quit my job we had to think long term. As much as I would love to be debt free and retire young, I don’t want to look back at this time in my life and regret not spending time with my son. Working late and being stressed out isn’t worth it in the long run.
In order to make this work, we had to put all of our loans in forbearance. It wasn’t an easy decision and it makes us sick to our stomachs to imagine all of our loans accruing interest while we sit on them for a year. We hope to be able to have some extra money at the end of the month to continue paying our interest.
This year is going to be a complete adventure! I am excited to spend more time with Robert and get to know myself a little better. I vow to spend this year figuring out what makes me happy so I can make a new career choice for when I return to the work force. I am also going to start a little challenge with myself. I am going to use this blog to come up with one way to save money every single day. I see a lot of beans in our future and very little shopping!
I love a challenge and can’t wait to come up with creative ways to stretch our finances. I am going to take the weekend off from blogging and start my challenge on Monday!
